Abstract

Mobile learning is getting very popular in this 21st century due to advanced digital technology. Students' in the present day are growing up in a society which is immensely different compared to their teachers. Many educators are struggling to keep up with the modern evolution and there is a need to change teacher beliefs. This study, investigated how students' can benefit if mobile hand held technology is incorporated into their learning. The study further investigates how low socio economic students' manage this technological evolution. Peer reviewed journals were analysed to find out how mobile digital technology is improving students' academic achievement level in different parts of the world. This study looked at many peer reviewed journals, but 18 were chosen to be analysed. The journals releveled that incorporation of these technology into lessons improve student motivation, improves academic achievement, improves engagement, builds student – teacher relationship, technology is very easy to use, students' feel comfortable, enhances peer engagement and social media can be beneficial to education. On the other hand, journals also reveal that teacher beliefs needs to be changed, more professional development is needed for teachers, schools are restricting many useful websites as they are fearful, can bring digital divide, can be disruptive to students' and low socio economic students' can be left out. There is an urgent need to involve this technology into lessons as for many students' using these handheld mobile devices has become a daily part of life. Many parents also believe that these devices can help their children achieve improved academic results. Mobile learning motivates and improves student academic achievement level, however many schools around the world do not give students' full access to internet during school hours and many also ban some useful websites which can be very beneficial to student learning.

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to examine how Atheist, Christian, and Muslim elite athletes motivate themselves before competitions. Using a semi-structured format qualitative design, seventeen elite male volleyball players were interviewed. For Muslim athletes, the focus was on “Praying” with the highest frequency, while for Christian athletes the “Visualization” had the highest frequency. For Atheist athletes, “Winning the Game” was the highest frequency. Muslim, Christian, and Atheist athletes had similar motivation focus point as; “Want to Do the Best”. When we compared the Muslim and Christian athletes, “Stay Alone” and “Want to Do the Best” were common motivation styles for them. They prefered to stay alone because of some reasons such as; suppress excitement, imagine, and relaxing. There was no similar expression between Muslim and Atheist athletes. “Desire to Win” and “Listen to Music” were common expressions for Christian and Atheist athletes.

Abstract

In this study, the effect of gender roles and perceived parental attitudes on career decision-making self-efficacy levels of university students was investigated. In addition, students' self-efficacy levels were evaluated according to gender, age, department, and class variables. A total of 248 students from different departments of Erciyes University Faculty of Sport Sciences participated in the study. Participants were administered the Gender Roles Scale (GRAS), Perceived Parental Attitudes Scale (PPAS), and Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy Scale (CMSS). Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test, Post Hoc test, Correlation analysis, and Hierarchical Regression analysis were used for the data. According to the results the study, gender roles and perceived parental attitudes of students had an effect on self-efficacy of career decision making. CMSS scores did not differ according to gender and grade, but differed by age and department. The fact that teachers have an egalitarian gender role can enable their students to have an egalitarian attitude. Therefore, it can be said that students should gain parental support in order to gain an egalitarian perspective on gender roles and guidance studies should be emphasized in order to develop their own thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes.

Abstract

This study compared the psychometric properties of reliability in Classical Test Theory (CTT), item information in Item Response (IRT), and validation from the perspective of modern validity theory for the purpose of bringing attention to potential issues that might exist when testing organizations use both test theories in the same testing administration. It was found that reliability, instead using corrected item-total test score correlations, and item information functions are only grossly similar and their conjoint use should be compartmentalized in the processes of test assembly, pre-testing, and scoring broadly speaking. For validity, only minor differences attributable to scoring processes are conceivable, but the main problem is that too much subjectivity by way of different arguments being constructed using the same test and test scores engenders a lack of consensus in the meaning of arguments. A checklist is presented for consideration by test validators that will produce greater consensus of arguments by improving argument comprehensiveness.

Abstract

Technology, socio-economic disparities, and an increasingly diverse population have changed the nature of American communities and thus the educational landscape. Higher education is functionally the gatekeeper for technical/professional careers. The achievement gap between the number of students starting a four-year degree and the number completing is discouraging. As a student transitions to college, many factors influence personal resiliency. Familial support, pre-college preparation, peer-to-peer relationships, and institutional connection all influence a student's resiliency. However, higher education's traditional engagement and transitional programming does not always engender connection nor promote academic success. Higher education has a responsibility to design institutional engagement that can lead to improved access and greater student resiliency. However, actual results of engagement strategies may have unintended results. Engagements can create division, and lead to diminished persistence and retention. This literature review explores recent research into Institutional engagement strategies.

Abstract

Childhood maltreatment is any behavioral conduct by parents or guardian or any known or unknown person which causes physical, emotional, sexual pain to the child and hurts him/her immensely. Suicide ideation can be defined as the intention or desire to kill oneself. Suicide ideation is largely prevalent among youngsters. The aim of the present research paper is to find out gender difference in childhood maltreatment and suicide ideation among male and female students studying in Government colleges of Jammu city, India. Convenience sampling technique is used to collect the data. Mean and t-test are used for the analysis of data. After the analysis of data significant gender difference is found in childhood maltreatment and suicide ideation among college students. Results revealed that female students are more prone to physical neglect, emotional neglect, emotional abuse, sexual abuse whereas male students indicated only higher degree of physical abuse. At the same time females have shown higher suicide ideation than males. Thus present results are to be taken into serious consideration because young students are the future of our nation and it becomes the responsibility of educationists and psychologists to lay stress to cure not only their physical health but mental health too. So this study lays emphasis on the fact that colleges should organize workshops for students where they can be motivated, encouraged to live their life to the fullest and there must be counselling cells in the colleges to prevent and reduce suicide ideation among college students because mentally healthy students can concentrate more on studies and develop healthy habits which would eventually leads to development of society.

Abstract

For decades, doctoral attrition has been a concern for administrators and faculty in higher education, along with doctoral students themselves. Although most doctoral students have the academic skills that they need in order to complete their degree, many struggle with challenges outside of the scholarly process. Affective challenges may be particularly present in online learning situations, as doctoral students are usually located far from their chairperson and are isolated from face-to-face interaction with faculty and their peers. In this article, the authors identify stressors that doctoral students experience, and discuss the relationship between isolation and anxiety. This “perfect storm” can result in disengagement from their work and their university, and they may ultimately leave their doctoral studies. The authors offer recommendations for supporting students through this stressful time, including support from their chair, other faculty, and their peers.

Abstract

Identity formation has been a keen area of interest for researchers and it involves several physiological, cognitive, biological, emotional, and hormonal changes often influenced by the adolescent's social environment. Adler conceptualized the notion that birth order of a person can leave an indelible impression on an individual's style of life. Birth order has a profound effect on how an adolescent is perceived by their family and how a person relates to the amount of responsibility, independence, and freedom he or she has been given. Based on this ideology, this paper attempts to understand the influence of birth order on the identity formation of middle adolescents. The exploratory study undertakes a purposive sampling of 158 respondents (79 males and 79 females). Ego Identity Process Questionnaire (EIPQ) and Global Adjustment Inventory were the tools used for data collection. Correlation analysis indicated significant relationship between identity and various dimensions of adjustment. t-ratios were applied to study gender differences, though no significant results were found. Also, one-way ANOVA was applied to study between group differences. However, findings suggested no significant differences between the first and third born individuals for their identity formation process.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine English as Foreign Language (EFL) students' perceived levels of self-efficacy and selfdetermination. The participants of the study were 378 university students studying in the English preparatory program of a state university in Turkey. As data collection instruments, two scales were utilized (i.e., Self-Efficacy Scale and Self- Determination Scale). The data were analyzed through Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) using the Arithmetic Mean, Mann-Whitney U, and Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient tests. It was found that the students' total self-efficacy and self-determination levels were average. Additionally, the data yielded the conclusion that there is a significant difference between the students' English academic achievement levels and their perceived self-efficacy levels in all four basic language skills. It is also concluded that there is a significant correlation between all dimensions of self-efficacy and those of self-determination scales. These findings were discussed in line with the relevant literature.

Abstract

Many countries have successfully used mutual educational and cultural exchange programmes to promote unity. South Africa has adopted similar approach as a social vehicle for influencing mutual appreciation. This study has documented students perception on the role of Buddy programme towards unity at the University of Venda using a survey design. It also profiled the potential benefits of the programme. A qualitative approach where data was collected from 20 focus groups of 10 participants each was used. Analysis was done using Atlas-ti version 8. Findings indicate that as the programme provides space and time for students to exchange cultural ideas, such as arts, food, languages, sports, and history, they have integrated and learnt how to accept each other. They have teams made up of students of different cultural backgrounds who collaborate, and network with each other. The result further stressed the need for the programme to be organised often. Discourse on xenophobia, racism, tribalism, and stereotypes should be enhanced in these events. A framework in line with the findings of the study was recommended.

Abstract

Pirie & Kieren (1994b) states that conceptual understanding in human beings is divided into eight levels. This qualitative and descriptive research study aims to identify the layers of conceptual understanding of fractions through three representations, namely of circles, rectangles, and number lines. The subjects of this research are three sixth-grade students from SD Batu Malang. The instruments of this research are an essay test consisting of 12 questions and a semistructured interview. The essay test is adopted from Tunç-Pekkan (2015) and test the fractional analysis of a circle representation, rectangle-representation, and number line representation with four questions provided for each representation. The data analysis of this research uses the resource triangulation technique. Based on the work done by the students, the results show that in terms of layers of conceptual understanding, Subject 1 demonstrated understanding layers from Primitive Knowing (Pk) through Property Noticing (Pn), Subject 2 demonstrated understanding layers from Image Making (Im) through Property Noticing (Pn); and Subject 3 demonstrated understanding layers from Image Making (Im) through Formalizing (F).

This articles looks for value in craft. Not so much value in the industrial sense; money, time, and effort, but from a individual perspective; community, companionship, self-discovery, and joy. Craft is more than just an final product, the true worth of it can be found in its process; time invested in learning the skills, building the communities, creating an object warm from human touch. The customer is bored of owning mass produced identical objects, instead they are searching for a connection with the maker. By identifying both professional and amateur craftsmen, the authors search for sense of value from them in terms of motivation for crafting, their interactions and community spirit, and their connections with their creations (Hackney, 2013).

Abstract

The paper emphasis on the teaching learning process by evaluating the Emotional Maturity and Metacognition of high school teachers. Metacognitive strategies are essential for the teachers of 21st century. This may enable teachers to successfully cope with and handle new situations. For this they should be able to regulate their thinking. So, it is the main duty of a teacher to impart knowledge and also they should make the students to think and to think over their thinking and to act accordingly. The metacognitive knowledge is encompassed with all the information about a proposed task that is available to a teacher. The emotional maturity of teachers should find expression in all domains, whether it is teaching, talking, playing, or walking. Emotionally mature teachers are likely to produce emotionally balanced learners and this transfer of maturity enables a teacher to manage or control his class irrespective of the conditions it has. If the teachers are emotionally matured, they can manage the situations effectively. When the teachers think, plan, and be aware of their classroom activities, they would be emotionally balanced and stable. The research was a survey type, which consists of random sampling of 800 high school teachers in Dindigul and Madurai districts. The investigator has constructed and validated the Metacognition Scale and Emotional Maturity Scale by self under the guidance of his research guide. Personal data sheet was prepared by the investigator. The interpretation of data was done with statistical methods in percentage analysis, mean, standard deviation, and 't'-test and correlation. The result showed that there is significant relationship between the Emotional Maturity and Metacognition of high school teachers.
